Brian joined Ninety One in 2019 and is a consultant in the South African Rates and South African and African Credit team. Brian joined the South African Reserve Bank as a deputy head of the Research Department and head of the Monetary Policy Research Unit in 1999. In 2003, he was appointed senior deputy head of the Research Department and in 2009 he became Advisor to the Governor, a position he held until retirement at the end of 2018. He was a member of the Reserve Bank’s Monetary Policy Committee from its inception in 1999 until his retirement. Prior to joining the Reserve Bank, he was Professor of Economics and the director of the School of Economics at the University of Cape Town. He was also a research associate at the London School of Economics’ Centre for Research into Economics and Finance in Southern Africa (CREFSA). Brian holds a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) degree in Economics and a Master of Arts degree in Economics, both from the University of Cape Town.
